Mental Attitude:

That’s the sound of the men working on the chain gang. What are you going to do when you retire? New research shows that those of us who choose to continue to work in their chosen field, post – retirement, are healthier in both physical and mental health. (This study evaluated full time, part time and fill in workers who continued on in their field) They showed far less diagnosed diseases and enjoyed better mental health as well. Those that chose a new career outside of their old profession didn’t do as well in the mental health category. Researchers blamed stress of learning the new job. Damn. Oh well. Looks like I’ll be around a while. Journal of Occupational Health Psychology October 2009

Health Alert :

Love them to death. A new study shows that there may be a link between the Gardisil Vaccine, given to young girls to prevent the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer, and the deaths of 2 young girls from A.L.S. ( aka Lou Gerigs Disease). Both girls had recently received the vaccine and on autopsy showed spinal cord damage not usually seen in others with A.L.S. The researchers are convinced it was caused by the vaccine. The pharmaceutical company that makes Gardisil denies the findings. In a related story the F.D.A. has just approved the Gardisil vaccine for young boys. Follow the money, honey. It’s only a statistic if it’s not you! American Neurological Association 134th Annual Meeting October 11-14 2009

Diet :

No bones about it. Every body needs calcium. It’s what keeps our bones healthy (It helps prevent osteoporosis). But calcium also has many other benefits to our body. Such as: preventing or controlling high blood pressure, relieving PMS symptoms, reducing muscle spasms and normal heart function. But, how much do we need? For those aged 1 – 100 the upper limit that we can tolerate daily is 2,500 mgs. (Without harm to our bodies) Those who need to watch their calcium intake are those who have: Kidney diseases (like kidney stones), heart disease ( it interferes with their medications) and bone tumors. Post- menopausal women are the group who need calcium the most. Large injestions of Vitamin D also cause dangerous levels of calcium in your body, so be careful. Exercise :

Gut check time. Most people want to know which exercise is best for strengthening their abdominal muscles. Which one will best prevent the Omentum from gaining momentum? Well, you ain’t gonna wanna hear this but …. wait for it… we still don’t know. An exhaustive search of all the literature showed that there was no clear cut winner (using electromyographic studies). My personal belief is the one that’s the best is the one that you will do. So get to it. Now, drop and give me 20. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics March – April 2009

Chiropractic :

Slippin’ and a slidin’. Many people tell me they have a slipped disc in their spine. I always say,”Say Wha’?” As far as I know, disc’s do a lot of things but they don’t slip. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear, rupture and collapse but they do not officially slip. Who made this stuff up? Disc’s are critical for proper spinal function. Any disc that is not in its proper position got that way because the vertebrae above or below became subluxated (misaligned). It’s the only way a disc can be damaged. It’s a very slow process but, chiropractic care has been shown to very effective in repositioning discs that aren’t in alignment. This is where chiropractic care shines. Ask anyone with a “slipped disc”. Dr. Bell

Wellness/Prevention :

I’m gonna party like it’s 1999. This swine flu thing is really nothing to sneeze at. The C.D.C. says that the death rate for children (half were teens) is on the rise. It recorded more deaths from swine flu since October 1st than all of last year. Yet, we have seen this before. No, not you or me, but our grandparents did. The big Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 killed one quarter of the worlds population. Researchers say that people freaked out. They divided into two groups: those that barracaded themselves into their homes and rarely came out and those that partied like there was no tomorrow. Scary stuff to think about. Which group would you fall in? In the mean time, WASH YOUR HANDS MORE. Also, those who were under Chiropractic care in 1918 did not die from that flu. Keep your appointment, and boogie on raggie chil’en. C.D.C. Press Release October 16, 2009
