Mental Attitude:

Eat your way to happy. The holidays sometimes produce depression. New research suggests you can eat your way to a better mood. How? By giving your body six essential things it needs to produce a good mood. Those six are: Foods rich in B-12 (meats like fish poultry, fish and dairy) and folic acid (folate) (beans and greens, fruits and vegetables, foods rich in selenium (beans and legumes, lean meat, seafood and nuts and seeds), fish (for omega 3 fatty acids) vitamin D (sunshine is best source) and our favorite, dark chocolate. Eat hearty, mate. WebMD November 30, 2009

Health Alert :

From bad to worse. I hear this all the time. The H1N1 vaccine is (or isn’t) safe. The CDC has released some interesting data about this. First, there have been some “adverse reactions” to the shot. They claim that about 90% have been mild (redness and soreness at the injection site) but 10% have been not so mild. The biggest culprit is called Guillian – Barre syndrome (a neurological disease that causes paralysis). Plus, they are now seeing a rise in MRSA infections in people who get the H1N1 flu, with pneumonia the biggest threat. Seems to me you’re damned if you do and damed if you don’t. You decide. CDC Press Release November 24, 2009

Diet :

Rolling Stones. Kidney stones affect about 5% of our population. They can cause severe pain (sometimes called, “Major League Pain”). Well, some research from our landlords (China) has discovered that by drinking Green Tea you can stop those pesky Calcium crystals from clumping together in your kidneys, thus reducing the agony of kidney stones. The more green tea you drink the better you become. Drink hearty, mate. Royal Society of Chemistry November 2009

Exercise :

I have to go Wii. Fitness coaches may not want to read this. A recent study shows that playing the Wii fitness and sports video games expends the same amount of energy as moderate intensity exercises (like brisk walking). The single arm stand game rated the highest followed by boxing followed by tennis and baseball. The worst expenditures of energy were golf and bowling. (Sorry, Mom) The American Heart Association recommends 30 mins. of moderate intensity exercise 5 days a week to reduce heart attacks and strokes. Now drop and give me Wii. American Heart Association Scientific Sessions November 15 – 19, 2009

Chiropractic :

Pain ain’t always a pain. Some people think Chiropractors are against taking pain medication for spinal related pain. Well, the true answer is yes and no. If you are not seeing a Chiropractor and simply trying to mask the pain by taking drugs then we are all probably against that. Why? Because the problem that is causing the pain is still there and all you’re doing is letting it get worse while feeling less pain. If you are under care and need some help in managing pain while recovering, that’s another story. I personally want to know what my body is doing so by not taking pain medication all the time I can tell what is hurting me and what isn’t. Plus, how do you know if you’re getting better if you are constantly on drugs? (Answer: you don’t.) ‘Nuff said. Dr. Bell

Wellness/Prevention :

And now for the good news. I’m not sure how to take this latest research. Scientists in Spain have discovered that men that drink alcohol regularly have less risk for heart disease. SAY WHA’? In fact, the more you drink the less risk you have. SAY WHA’? Here’s the breakdown: Light drinkers (1 drink / day) showed a 31% reduction, moderate drinkers (2 drinks/day) showed a 51% reduction and heavy drinkers (5 or more drinks / day) showed a 54% reduced risk for heart disease. Before you discount this research, know this: Spain is notorius for drinking YET has a very low heart disease rate. HUMM. Drink hearty mate. Public Health Department of Gipuzkoa, Basque Government, San Sabastian, Spain November 18, 2009

Mental Attitude:

Sweets for the sweet. Most people stress out after eating something chocolate. Well, chill out. Researchers have reported that eating only 1.4 oz.s of dark chocolate daily for 2 weeks reduced the stress hormones in those tested. They also reported other health benefits from eating dark chocolate, such as: improved insulin sensitivity, reduced blood pressure, improved mood and anti-oxidant benefits. It also improved metabolism and increased the “good” bacteria in the gut. They recommend eating half the chocolate mid-morning and the other half at mid-afternoon for the best results. Eat up for better health. Yummy. Journal of Proteome Research October, 2009

Health Alert :

Like playing pool with a rope. Will it ever stop? Now scientists are saying that men who are exposed to the chemical BPA (bisphenol A) are having sexual function problems. That is to say they had erectile dysfunction, loss of sexual desire, ejaculation problems and less than optimal satisfaction with their sex lives.(Duh) BPA is used to make “plastic” water bottles as well as baby bottles and is used as a liner for many canned food items. Sounds to me as if they have finally found a male birth control pill. Journal of Human Reproduction November 11, 2009

Diet :

He looks good but what a grouch. The debate of low fat diet vs low carb diet is now over. A new study compared both and found interesting results. First, both groups lost the same amount of weight after one year. (Wasn’t that the original debate?) However, the low carb dieters were found to be way more moody after the year was over. Both groups initially showed improvements in their moods but the low carb group couldn’t hold onto their cheery disposition. The researchers blamed it on the difficulty of trying to eat a diet that contained 61% fat. Maybe they should eat dark chocolate? Archives of Internal Medicine November 9, 2009

Exercise :

A little is better than none. Everyone knows an exercise nut. You know, someone who is obsessed with working out 7 days a week. A recent study shows that people who exercise only 2 days a week have lower obesity rates, a healthier mental outlook and were less depressed than those who never worked out. On the flip side was this interesting fact: people who worked out every day fared slightly worse in these 3 categories than those who worked out only 5 – 6 times per week. Improvements were noted with as little as 30 minutes of exercise 2 days a week. Now drop and give me 30 minutes, 2 days a week. Gallup – Healthways Well – Being Index November 6. 2009

Chiropractic :

Their future is in my hands. I get this question all the damn time, “Why do children need Chiropractic care? Aren’t their bones too soft to subluxate?” To most people, taking their child to a Doctor of Chiropractic ranks right below witch doctor on their list of specialists their child might need. Listen up. Chiropractors all know that a child’s spine is mostly cartilagenous. This doesn’t prevent it from becoming misaligned. In fact cartilage deforms to abnormal stress (i.e. subluxation) faster than bone does. Research studies show subluxations occurring in- utero from abnormal positioning of the fetus.

Birthing trauma to an infants neck is also very common. Learning to walk, falls ( 80% of infants will fall from a height of 4 feet before the end of their first year) and accidents all contribute to infants needing Chiropractic care. Want more info? Go to www. I.C.P.A ( International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) to become better educated. In the end, it’s all about nerve damage and the loss of function that arises from spinal damage. Some of you may already know this but, I treat all children under the age of 2 at no cost (the kids usually have no money, Ha-Ha). I do this so they don’t grow up to have the same damn problems you and I have. And I LOVE ALL CHILDREN. ‘Nuff said. Dr. Bell

Wellness/Prevention :

Too pooped to pop. Being a “Boomer” sucks. Now researchers are saying that 20% of “baby boomers” are now ending up on disability due to obesity, lack of exercise, mental disturbances (our parents said that T.V. would rot our brains) and bio-mechanical (joint damage, like SPINE, knees and hips) injuries. It’s only going to get worse as more “boomers” reach retirement age. So much for the “Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse theory! This is going to cost us a huge fortune to take care of these folks. (If you want to help someone, get them in for an adjustment. It’s a good place to start.) American Journal of Public Health November 12, 2009

Mental Attitude:

Do what I do and not what I say. This just in: children (in this study the children were only 12 months old.) notice when their parents are disgusted with an action or an object and afterward the child wants that action or object more as a response to their parents disgust. Spooky stuff, but it does explain a lot. Researchers explain,” This study suggests that when babies look at adults what they are really doing is making an association between the emotion and the thing that’s triggering the emotion, how well they do that influences how well they use that emotion to regulate their own behavior.” We can out smart them, if we are smarter than they are. Be disgusted with broccoli for a change. Developmental Psychology January 2009
Health Alert :

Everywhere there’s lots of piggies. Swine flu (aka H1N1 virus) is getting a lot of press. Now researchers are finding that there are certain groups of people that are resistant to one of the two anti-viral drugs used to treat the “Porky Plague”. Why this is big news is that the flu virus then can mutate into something that has nothing to stop (or slow) its spread. To date there has been very few cases of this happening but scientists are not optimistic that it can’t happen. Then we are in BIG trouble. You’ve been warned. World Health Organization Global Alert and Response September 25, 2009

Diet :

Crater Lake got nothin’ on me. Who didn’t have acne as a child? It’s almost a right of passage. Now researchers think they know why adolescents get acne. Ready….Wait for it… Because they don’t eat enough vegetables. Ker-thunk. Think about it, most teens are more interested in Doritos than in brussel sprouts. Get them to eat more veggies and say good-bye to pimple paradise. I repeat, be disgusted with broccoli for a change. Journal of BMC Public Health September 16, 2009
Exercise :

Thank God I’m NOT a country boy. We all want our kids to participate in sports for all the usual reasons. Unless you live in the country (aka rural areas). It seems that children who live in the city and are involved in sports, have LESS chance of using illegal drugs. (They have more opportunities to hang out with kids who don’t use drugs). However, us country bumpkins have a higher rate of drug use because sports exposes us to a limited number of people we could hang out with. (With less opportunities to get away from dem’ druggies). Note to all parents: Don’t be disgusted with drugs. American Psychological Association Annual Meeting March, 2007

Chiropractic :

Chiropractic Myth Buster. I hear this a lot,” I have 20 visits with a Chiropractor through my insurance. Why the hell don’t you take my insurance?” Right before I throw them out of my office I usually explain why. It goes like this: Yes, those lying bastards who sold you your insurance policy said you would get 20 Chiropractic visits a year. What they conviently forgot to tell you was that each visit would have to be pre-approved before you could be seen.(A wait of up to 2 weeks) They also forgot to tell you that the Doctor (That’s me) would be penalized if he saw you more than THREE times in one year. I saw a patient one time (before I wised up) that had 3 herniated discs in her low back. Her insurance company authorized 6 total visits. Less pain yes, spinally corrected, not even close. I absolutely refuse to allow someone with a high school diploma (apologies to whoever you are with a high school diploma) to tell me how to treat someone with serious spinal injury. How do I explain it to someone that I can only help you for a few visits because your insurance company thinks I can help you in X number of visits. I can’t and won’t. What they love is your premium payments, they could care less about you. I love all my patients enough to not do that to them. ‘Nuff said.
Wellness/Prevention :

Hang ‘em high. If you got children this will make you (them) sick. The makers of children’s Tylenol , McNeil Consumer Healthcare, is recalling all children’s Tylenol made between April and June 2008. (Let’s see, that’s 17 months after the fact) because they found it to be contaminated with Burkholderia Cepacia bacteria, This bacteria can cause serious problems in those with already weaken immune systems. Why else would you give your child Tylenol if their immune system wasn’t already weakened by a disease? They say to date, no child has fallen ill because of this “tainted batch” and are recalling this crap simply as a precaution. Sure… Ask Dr. Bell for a copy of the list of contaminated Children’s Tylenol and check those product numbers. Pitchforks and torches anyone? McNeil Consumer Healthcare Letter to Healthcare Professionals September 18, 2009
