Mental Attitude:

Meet me at the alter. A recent study shows the correlation between church attendance and substance abuse. It appears that those who are brought to church early in life appear to be influenced more by their genetics (what their genes do in relation to their environment) as to what the church is saying.(These children still have less of a likelihood of substance abuse, however, it is from environmental i.e. home life factors.) However, those who attend church later in life are less likely to vere toward substance abuse. Conclusion: Church is good fo’ you and dem’ kids as far as staying away from harmful substances.( And many more things not scientifically studied) Parents wake up! American Journal of Psychiatry October, 2009

 Health Alert:

I feel faint. The Miss Piggy Polka (AKA Swine flu) is gaining more press than Obama’s health care plan. (Interesting that both have never been photographed together at the same time). Now, the F.D.A. (no, not: Found Dead on Arrival) is issuing a press release because certain “businessmen” are selling FAKE Tamiflu drugs over the Internet and certain people of questionable mental status are gobbling them up like candy. Unfortunately, these “drugs” usually contain a mysterious powder and aspirin. (This may be better for you than the original). Anyway, they are ripping off people by the thousands. Don’t be a sucka’. You’ve been warned. F.D.A News Release October 15, 2009

Diet :

No flied lice. What you eat can say a lot about who you are. For instance, researchers compared dietary habits of those who ate rice and those who didn’t. (Must be a slow science week!) Anyway, those who ate rice showed a better dietary pattern than those who didn’t. For example, those who ate rice ate less fat and saturated fat and ate mo’ vegetables, fiber and iron than those who didn’t. Race/ethnicity, education and income stopped people from falling into the “I eat rice” group. How ’bout you? Journal of the American Dietic Association October 2009

Exercise :

Eat the pickle. Serious athletes (you know who you are) often get muscle cramps while exercising. A “Urban Myth” was that if you drank pickle juice or any other carbo – drink before working out, you wouldn’t get cramps. Well, put the juice back in the jar. The latest research shows that pickle juice and carbo – drinks won’t do squat for your body up to 60 minutes post – work-out. The one thing they will do is to dehydrate you. HUM. Don’t blame the pickle. Journal of Athletic Training Sept. / Oct. 2009

Chiropractic :

Unless you’re my Chiropractor, get off my back. Oh man, here come da’ holidaze. Stress out the ying-yang. Did you know your body doesn’t know the difference between physical stress and emotional stress? Physical stress can be defined as any damage to your body (THINK SUBLUXATIONS). Your body does not know the difference between physical stress and emotional stress.(It reacts the same to both…Fight or flight) WELL, I can’t do squat about yo’ emotional stress but I can reduce yo’ physical stress by re- aligning your spine. Immune system goes up. stress goes down. All with one little adjustment. It’ll get you thru the holidaze better. Dr. Bell

Wellness/Prevention :

Feed a fever, give them Asthma. Life is hard. What to do when yo’ chile comes down wit’ a fever? We believed them when they said to give your child Tylenol (acetamenophen) when they had a fever. Now, researchers have thrown up very strong evidence that Tylenol causes Asthma in children if you give it to them when they are under the age of one. It also has been linked to asthma in adults. The makers of Tylenol deny this research, as expected. I say, Hang em’ by their pickles. I AM PISSED. How long will we allow these BASTARDS to cripple our healthy children before we string them up??? Until then, ibuprofen appears to not be linked to asthma. Journal Chest November 2009

Mental Attitude:

High or low? Faith. Everyone has it, in one form or another. The latest trend in psychotherapy is to see a “faith-based” therapist. Why? Well, most people feel that traditional therapists aren’t allowing room for their views on faith. Sigmund Freud taught that true psychotherapy had no room for religion and it took off from there. However, faith-based therapy is rapidly growing in this country, from 19,000 therapists in 1999 to over 50,000 today. Most people feel that it is important to incorporate their mind, body and spirit into any discussion of mental health problems. What say you? I say, Amen. Psychology Today March 11, 2008
Health Alert :

High or low 2. Everyone has heard the latest from the C.D.C. that the Swine Flu (or as it’s called in the biz H1N1) will hospitalize 1.8 million people and may kill up to 90,000. Scary stuff. Well, what they conveniently forgot to mention is that these numbers are a “plausible scenario” meaning that it isn’t very likely to happen. It is not a prediction. They say they must plan for the worst. Thus the numbers mentioned are the worst case scenario. The top dog at the C.D.C. says the best plan for us is the “hands and home” method. That is: Wash your hands often, cough or sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue (not your hands) and stay home if you’re sick. Common sense will prevail, but don’t count on it. C.D.C. Report August 25, 2009
Diet :

Gut check time. People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are some hurtin’ folks. There is a new study that may help them. Researchers have found that Psyllium fiber can reduce the symptoms of IBS by as much as 90%. The study is quick to remind everyone that bran fiber didn’t do squat in relieving symptoms. Why? Bran is an insoluble type of fiber while Psylium is soluble and that’s the difference. Pass this on. British Medical Journal August 28, 2009
Exercise :

Ahoy, ye land lubber. It’s really hard to exercise when you hurt. There is a way to move yo’ booty and not go through the pain. How? By swimming, my land locked friend. If you are in water up to your waist you weigh 50% less than on land. Water up to your chest means you weigh 65% less and up to your neck you are 90% lighter. Less weight means less force into your joints. Plus, even simple walking in water has a benefit as the resistance in water is 12 times that of air. It works every major muscle group and is aerobic to boot. Beginners are urged to start slow and work up to a more rigorous workout. Now, drop and give me 20 laps. WebMD July 13, 2006 ” Fitness Basics: Swimming is for Everyone”
Chiropractic :

Fool me once… Our friend and patient Mark A. asked a very good question this week. ” What is the deal with Inversion Tables? Do they really work?” Well, the answer is yes and no. If you have a healthy spine then the decompression offered by going head over heals is good. It gently stretches the spine and allows fluid to re-enter the disks. BUT, if your spine has any kind of problem then I wouldn’t recommend inversion. Why? A bone out of position causes the nerve to be irritated which causes the surrounding muscles to spasm. A muscle in spasm will TEAR if stretched improperly. This makes people scream OUCH. Any kind of a disc problem will probably immobilize you if you hang upside down. I have seen it and it ain’t pretty. I’ve seen the ads on TV and my advice would be to pass on this one. Dr. Bell Got questions? E-mail me @ dr.bell@att.net

Wellness/Prevention :

Radiate me home. An estimated 2% of all cancer cases are caused by exposure to high levels of radiation. Interestingly enough, the highest doses come from the very people trying to save your butt. The 3 highest offenders (giving off the most radiation) are: Nuclear Imaging (for detecting heart problems), Computerized Tomography scans (C.T. or C.A.T.) and Nuclear Stress Testing (also for detecting heart problems). The cardiologist expert quoted in this research article (Dr. Michael S. Lauer M.D.) says, “Medical practice should be based on the most rigorous science, and we don’t have that for many of these tests.” (Relax, the radiation levels of x-rays taken in our office are way below any level for concern.) Mental Attitude:

Sleep perchance to dream. Fall is here and with it comes the switch to daylight savings time. New research shows that with the loss of an hour’s worth of sleep comes an increase in on the job injuries. In a study that spans 24 years researchers found a 68% increase in days lost to injury resulting from injuries received on the Monday following the change to daylight savings. They recommend not scheduling dangerous activities on that Monday. I say cancel daylight savings altogether. What say ye? American Psychological Association September 1, 2009

Health Alert :

Flu on you. By now everyone has heard that the swine flu is on the way. Here are the top two ways of getting the porcine virus (apologies to Porky Pig): The number 1 way to get the flu is to have someone with the flu cough or sneeze directly in yo’ face. The odds are 50/50 that this will infect you. The number 2 way of getting the swine flu is to touch an infected surface then touch your eyes, nose or mouth without washing your hands first. The odds here are less than 1 in 3. In other words, wash dem’ hands, quit pickin’ yo’ nose and flip a coin if sneezed at. Society for Risk Analysis September 2009

Diet :

Color my world. The advice on what to eat changes every week. Now, the experts are recommending chucking all previous information and think technocolor. Say what? Well it appears that the colors of certain foods contain the nutritional properties that help fight diseases. Ready? Red foods contain lycopene that helps fight cancers of the prostate, lung, breast and uterus. Orange foods contain cryptoxanthin and beta-carotene which fight against arthritis, certain cancers and improves memory function. Green foods contain lutein and zeaxanthin which help fight against eye degeneration, heart disease and high cholesterol. Purple foods contain anthocyanins which help against arthritis and heart disease. The experts say eat a whole lot of different colored foods each day. Finally a diet I can understand. Psychology Today April 2, 2009

Exercise :

One for the road. Swallow hard for this one. New evidence suggests that the more you drink (as in alcohol) the more likely you are to exercise. The reason? To burn off the calories you took in by drinking. Heavy drinkers exercised almost 20 minutes more per week than their non-drinking buddies. The expert quoted warned than the health risk of heavy drinking out weighs the benefits of vigorous exercise. (Arnold must have slammed quite a few in his day.) American Journal of Health Promotion September/October 2009

Chiropractic :

Questions from da’ net. My dear friend Nancy (not my Nancy) asks, ” Can you explain the benefits of Chiropractic care for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome suffers? ” Well, yes I think I can. Approximately 75 % of all Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) problems come from subluxations in the neck. I feel the other 25 % come from either the shoulder, elbow or wrist being out of alignment causing serious nerve damage that leads to the numbness and pain felt in the hands. I have helped people who have had the surgical procedure to expand the carpal tunnel and found it didn’t help them. Why? Because the “pinched” nerve causing their symptoms wasn’t in their wrist. Even if the problem is in their wrist, a good chiropractor should be able to adjust the wrist and help them. Do I help everyone I see with CTS? No, only about 95%. (Better odds than catching the swine flu if someone sneezes on you.) Dr. Bell Got any questions? E-Mail me at dr.bell@att.net

Wellness/Prevention :

The long and winding road. Hey, do you want to live longer? If so, then you better go get you some “health insurance”. Researchers found that your risk of dying increases by 40% if you don’t have insurance. This averages to about 45,000 deaths per year. This is more deaths than is caused by kidney disease. Maybe they should call it “health assurance”. (Maybe not, they would only charge you more) Is Jerry Lewis listening? I’m sorry but car, home and life insurance doesn’t count. American Journal of Public Health September 17, 2009
