Mental Attitude:

Eat your way to happy. The holidays sometimes produce depression. New research suggests you can eat your way to a better mood. How? By giving your body six essential things it needs to produce a good mood. Those six are: Foods rich in B-12 (meats like fish poultry, fish and dairy) and folic acid (folate) (beans and greens, fruits and vegetables, foods rich in selenium (beans and legumes, lean meat, seafood and nuts and seeds), fish (for omega 3 fatty acids) vitamin D (sunshine is best source) and our favorite, dark chocolate. Eat hearty, mate. WebMD November 30, 2009

Health Alert :

From bad to worse. I hear this all the time. The H1N1 vaccine is (or isn’t) safe. The CDC has released some interesting data about this. First, there have been some “adverse reactions” to the shot. They claim that about 90% have been mild (redness and soreness at the injection site) but 10% have been not so mild. The biggest culprit is called Guillian – Barre syndrome (a neurological disease that causes paralysis). Plus, they are now seeing a rise in MRSA infections in people who get the H1N1 flu, with pneumonia the biggest threat. Seems to me you’re damned if you do and damed if you don’t. You decide. Diet :

Rolling Stones. Kidney stones affect about 5% of our population. They can cause severe pain (sometimes called, “Major League Pain”). Well, some research from our landlords (China) has discovered that by drinking Green Tea you can stop those pesky Calcium crystals from clumping together in your kidneys, thus reducing the agony of kidney stones. The more green tea you drink the better you become. Drink hearty, mate. Royal Society of Chemistry November 2009

Exercise :

I have to go Wii. Fitness coaches may not want to read this. A recent study shows that playing the Wii fitness and sports video games expends the same amount of energy as moderate intensity exercises (like brisk walking). The single arm stand game rated the highest followed by boxing followed by tennis and baseball. The worst expenditures of energy were golf and bowling. (Sorry, Mom) The American Heart Association recommends 30 mins. of moderate intensity exercise 5 days a week to reduce heart attacks and strokes. Now drop and give me Wii. Chiropractic :

Pain ain’t always a pain. Some people think Chiropractors are against taking pain medication for spinal related pain. Well, the true answer is yes and no. If you are not seeing a Chiropractor and simply trying to mask the pain by taking drugs then we are all probably against that. Why? Because the problem that is causing the pain is still there and all you’re doing is letting it get worse while feeling less pain. If you are under care and need some help in managing pain while recovering, that’s another story. I personally want to know what my body is doing so by not taking pain medication all the time I can tell what is hurting me and what isn’t. Plus, how do you know if you’re getting better if you are constantly on drugs? (Answer: you don’t.) ‘Nuff said. Dr. Bell

Wellness/Prevention :

And now for the good news. I’m not sure how to take this latest research. Scientists in Spain have discovered that men that drink alcohol regularly have less risk for heart disease. SAY WHA’? In fact, the more you drink the less risk you have. SAY WHA’? Here’s the breakdown: Light drinkers (1 drink / day) showed a 31% reduction, moderate drinkers (2 drinks/day) showed a 51% reduction and heavy drinkers (5 or more drinks / day) showed a 54% reduced risk for heart disease. Before you discount this research, know this: Spain is notorius for drinking YET has a very low heart disease rate. HUMM. Drink hearty mate.
